Crisis Response
Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)
In partnership with Red Deer Regional Hospital, the Sendero Centre offers comprehensive support and care for individuals affected by sexual assault. Red Deer Regional Hospital conducts sexual assault exams for anyone in central Alberta and serves as the main point of contact for communities between Edmonton and Calgary.
Following a sexual assault, timely medical care is essential to address potential concerns related to injury, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). When you choose to seek medical support at Red Deer Regional Hospital, a specialized team will be ready to assist you. Trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) provide a thorough medical examination, including pregnancy and STI testing, and follow up with you regarding any medical results. Should you choose to report the incident, SANE nurses can also collect forensic evidence in coordination with police procedures.
During your visit, you have the option to connect with a trained member of the Sendero Centre’s Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). Our SART members offer compassionate support, information, and resources, along with a support package containing comforting items such as a blanket, stuffed animal, deck of cards, and colouring pages.
SART members are also available to support your family or anyone accompanying you. Additionally, if desired, an RCMP officer can take your statement and address any legal or investigative questions you may have, ensuring comprehensive support throughout this process.
NOTE: Physical exam only by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, including a medical exam and STI screening. Police are not contacted and no police investigation is conducted.
Finding support after an assault
A Third Option
The Third Option Evidence Collection program, an initiative by Alberta Health Services (AHS), offers survivors of sexual assault the choice to undergo a forensic medical exam—including the option of a Sexual Assault Evidence Kit—and have the collected evidence stored confidentially until they are ready to decide on reporting the incident to police. This victim-centred approach gives survivors time to explore other supports they may need while ensuring that crucial evidence is preserved, potentially aiding future legal proceedings. Through a partnership with AHS, the Alberta RCMP provides these kits free of charge and securely stores the evidence for up to 12 months, allowing survivors ample time to make an informed decision. Importantly, no identifying information about the survivor is shared by AHS with the RCMP, ensuring full confidentiality.
The Third Option is available at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre for those seeking medical care after an assault. Specialized Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) provide guidance on the program and support survivors throughout the process.
